The Mission of School2Home is to close the Achievement Gap and Digital Divide at low-performing California middle schools by integrating the use of computing and broadband technologies into teaching and learning. By focusing on these schools, School2Home reaches students who are statistically less likely to perform well in school and more likely to lack access to digital tools than their peers in high-performing schools. Currently, School2Home is active in 12 districts and 31 schools. School2Home is an initiative of the California Emerging Technology Fund, a public benefit foundation established in 2007 by the California Public Utilities Commission to close the state’s Digital Divide.
HISTORY
School2Home was established in 2009 with support from the California Emerging Technology Fund and The Children’s Partnership in response to the new “divide” in education—between those who have high-speed Internet access and 21st-century digital learning tools and those who do not. The program was launched in 2010 at Stevenson Middle School in the Los Angeles Unified School District and at Central Middle School in the Riverside Unified School District, providing a suite of supports for students, parents, and teachers in digital literacy and learning. Since that time, School2Home has been implemented at 31 schools in 12 school districts across California. Among its areas of impact are: for parents, increased involvement in homework and school; for teachers, increased knowledge of digital learning techniques; for students, increased interest in school, improved research skills, increased test scores.
