According to Next Generation Learning Challenge and Next Generation Systems Initiative, Flexible Environments are defined as: Time, space, roles and instructional modes flex with the needs of students and teachers rather than being fixed variables.
RUSD’s vision for Personalized Learning defines Flexible Environments as: All components of the learning environment (teacher time, instructional delivery, physical plant, learning resources, assessments, etc) are adapted to most effectively support student competency.
At University Heights, Flexible Environments will be enhanced through different learning environments, both inside and outside of class, through various groupings, individual pacing, pathways and technologies to facilitate in the student's’ learning process. Students will move throughout four zones of learning: Mastery Hall, Hub, Idea Center, and Lounge. The Mastery Hall enables learners to participate in discussions and engage in lectures. The Hub is is housed in a double classroom and allows students to work at their own speed in areas that require flexibility around time. The Idea Center is for group collaboration, discussions, analysis, learner presentations and projects. The Lounge is a quiet independent area that enables students to focus on specific tasks that require minimal interaction with the teachers.
